Balchen demonstrates the position for holding the instrument and hardingfele tuning and playing techniques, and performs six Valdres and Telemark springar tunes from his Course for Beginners manual. Contains Parts I and II, titled Fiddling in the Midwest (Slåttespel i midtvesten) of the multi-part television series produced in 1986 by Norwegian National Broadcasting (NRK). An in-depth look at the hardingfele in America from its beginnings to the present, with interviews of Andrea Een, Harold Sorensen, Thor Quale, Carl Narvestad, Ron Poast, Becky Weis, and Sue Overhauser, among others. Includes important archival footage of Anund Roheim playing and dancing, and fiddler Gunnar Odden, plus dancers Hans Haugen, Anna Roheim, Ole Braaten, and Hilda Kringstad in Decorah, Iowa in 1969.
