TOBY WEINBERG (Intermediate hardingfele), who has been studying Hardanger fiddle for nearly 25 years, is well known in the U.S. as both an accomplished performer and a skilled and patient teacher. He is the founder and leader of the Boston Spelemannslag and has been involved in numerous festivals and courses around the country. This will be the fifth time Toby has taught hardingfele at an HFAA annual workshop; he has also taught seljefløyte (willow flute).
Paul Morrissett (Intermediate hardingfele), a folk multi-instrumentalist for 30 years, discovered his passion for the hardingfele in 1986. He has made numerous trips to Norway to study with master fiddlers. While he specializes in the music of Telemark, his repertoire includes tunes from all hardingfele tradition areas. Paul has taught and played hardingfele and fiddle at Scandinavian and international dance and music workshops across the country, and is known as a driving, spirited dance fiddler. “By day," Paul is a founding member of the Grammy Award winning klezmer band "The Klezmatics," performing world wide and appearing on dozens of recordings.
Jennifer Turbes (Beginning hardingfele), born into a Norwegian-American family in Minnesota, started playing viola when she was three. She holds a BA degree from St. Olaf College and Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the Eastman School of Music. Jennifer attended the HFAA’s annual workshop in 2008 on a Bernt Balchen Hardingfele Scholarship and was the Beginner mentor in 2010.
KARIN LOBERG CODE and LORETTA KELLEY, our Dance Class Fiddlers, need no introduction to those who have attended Scandinavian music and dance camps and weekend events around the U.S. We are delighted that they will be bringing their experience of over 20 years each of hardingfele study and the driving energy of their playing to our dance classes and parties.
DEB COLLINS-HILL (Beginner mentor) teaches fiddle, violin and hardingfele to students of all ages in the Pacific Northwest. She attended the 2010 HFAA Workshop on an Olav Jørgen Hegge Hardingfele Scholarship.
